Celebrating our Design a Lorry Competition Winners!
Celebrating our Design a Lorry Competition Winners!
In summer 2023,
we challenged young people aged 5–14 to get creative and design an Aldi lorry that would inspire the UK to enjoy healthy, sustainable food. The judging panel of representatives from Team GB, ParalympicsGB and Aldi looked through the 12,000 entries for designs which were creative and exciting, celebrated what's great about healthy, sustainable food, and would stand out on an Aldi lorry.
After much deliberation, the judges chose designs by Joshua, age 10, from Mottram C of E Primary School, Victoria, age 13, from Firrhill High School, and Sara, age 13, from Whitmore High School as the first-place winners from England, Scotland and Wales, respectively.
Last week, athletes from Team GB and ParalympicsGB visited each of the first-place winners, to present them with their prizes in a special assembly, and to show them their designs in person for the first time!
England winner – Joshua, age 10, Mottram C of E Primary
The judges loved Joshua’s use of negative space, which showcases a range of seasonal fruits and vegetables, as well as including an eye-catching healthy eating message for the back of the lorry: "Eat good, feel good!"
Team GB weightlifter Emily Campbell delivered Joshua's his prizes in a fun filled assembly for the whole school. Joshua was overwhelmed when he saw his design on the side of the lorry, and loved that he gets to keep a miniature version for his bedroom, too!
Scotland winner – Victoria, age 13, Firrhill High School
“Your healthy fruit-ure awaits you!” is the catchy message that Scottish winner Victoria from Firrhill High School included on her winning, Paris 2024 themed lorry design. Complete with a cartwheeling lemon and a pair of tandem sprinter cherries, Victoria’s design truly encapsulates the Get Set to Eat Fresh spirit!
ParalympicsGB athlete Melanie Woods returned to her teaching roots, leading an assembly which put Victoria and her classmates' knowledge of healthy eating to the test!
Wales winner – Sara, age 13, Whitmore High School
Last but not least, the winning design soon to be hitting the roads of Wales, and beyond, by Sara from Whitmore High School! Her cute fruit and veggie characters encourage everyone to work together to make healthier choices.
Sara and her school were visited by Team GB rugby sevens star Sam Cross. He spoke to the students about his career as an athlete and how it feels to win an Olympic silver medal, before revealling Sara's winning design!
The prizes
As well as seeing their winning design on an Aldi lorry, each of our three winners also received a £100 Aldi voucher, a Team GB and ParalympicsGB goody bag and £1,000 for their schools.
But they weren’t the only pupils to take home amazing prizes!
Check out the full article on our the second- and third-place designers, as well as a special mention for the designs shortlisted by our judges, too. Well done to each of our winners and a big thank you to everyone who entered the Design a Lorry Competition 2023! We loved seeing all your designs and hope you all enjoyed taking part.
Jemma Townsend, Marketing Director at Aldi, said: “The Design a Lorry competition is part of our collaborative efforts with Team GB and ParalympicsGB to promote healthy eating among young people. “We had more than 12,000 amazing entries, but Joshua, Victoria and Sara’s designs really stood out to our judges. We are looking forward to seeing these eye-catching designs on the roads, inspiring people to eat more fresh, healthy food!”
